Virtual Journal Club, Episode 3
On October 25th, 2018, the THANC (Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer) Foundation hosted a Virtual Journal Club to discuss a recent publication: Impact of Minimal Extrathyroid Extension in Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. The presentation was delivered by lead author Eyal Robenshtok, MD, an expert endocrinologist at Rabin Medical Center at Tel Aviv University.
Dr. Robenshtok presented his research on minimal extrathyroid extension. In this study, he comprehensively reviewed all of the medical literature related to this topic, including studies on papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). Dr. Robenshtok and his colleagues demonstrated that minimal extrathyroid extension is a clinically meaningful pathologic feature which confers a greater risk of recurrence. However, they also found that minimal extrathyroid extension has negligible impact on disease-related mortality and should not change tumor staging. Dr. Robenshtok and his colleagues were able to provide clarity on a controversial topic in the thyroid cancer treatment community. Thank you, Dr. Robenshtok!
