The Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer (THANC) Foundation, under the direction of Dr. Mark Urken, Chief of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology, evaluates the impact of thyroid, head and neck cancer on patient function, disease progression, and long term survival. The THANC Foundation also sponsors patient education, community awareness, and family support programs. The THANC Foundation is based in Union Square, New York City at the Institute for Head and Neck and Thyroid Cancer in Mount Sinai Beth Israel.
Research associates help lead the development of a variety of initiatives at THANC. Working alongside physicians and PhDs, research associates run clinical studies, coordinate projects, and write manuscripts which will lay the groundwork to improve care and treatment of these diseases. The THANC Foundation’s research director, Dr. Cathy Lazarus, develops and coordinates innovative clinical studies that follow patients throughout their entire clinical course. These research endeavors advance understanding and treatment of speech and behavioral pathologies of head, neck and thyroid patients.
Due to all of these clinical and behavioral efforts, the THANC foundation has opened new and exciting research pathways, developed earlier detection methods and explored potentially more effective treatments leading to improved quality of life.
